The Cost of Sin - Jan. 6-10

This month we’re reading in Leviticus, it can be a tough read I know. It’s easy to start thinking to ourselves, “Is this book really necessary? Why is it still in the Bible if we don’t need to sacrifice anymore?” However, we know that God has preserved his entire Word for a reason! Paul in 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that, “ALL scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” So let’s dig in and learn from Leviticus!

If someone incurs guilt in one of these cases, he is to confess he has committed that sin. He must bring his penalty for guilt for the sin he has committed to the Lord: a female lamb or goat from the flock as a sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement on his behalf for his sin. - Leviticus 5:5-6

Alright, so one of the reasons that I think many people struggle with reading Leviticus is because it can seem repetitive, and it is repetitive, we read about sacrifice after sacrifice after sacrifice after sacrifice. But imagine if we were still under law like this. Many of us don’t own livestock today, so to put it in easier terms to understand, a cow can be worth $1000+ and a goat is worth around $200. So every time we sin, we’d owe $1000 dollars. That’s unreal right? We sin all the time, be it unintentional like a snarky tone used with our children or intentionally lying to our employer. We’d be bankrupted in no time. As my lovely wife pointed out earlier this week, we should see all these requirements and think to ourselves, how unattainable is that? And it is unattainable, that’s the point, no sacrifice would ever be enough, that is until the sacrifice of Jesus.

Jesus came, and in one amazing and awe inspiring sacrifice, died for all the sins of his elect. Now think about that in light of all the requirements we see in Leviticus. We see that we could never have met those standards, but Jesus paid that price for us. Let’s praise Him that He saved us and paid this debt that we never could have on our own, and let us be thankful that we can still read about it in his word, so that we can be reminded of how high the cost is of our sin. Be blessed and have a great week.
